    Description

Frank Shortey 2004 Deer Hide Painting Survivors Of Little Big Horn Lakota.
Very few of Frank Shortey’s painted hide robes appear on the market. This one purchased in 2004- the year it was painted- in South Dakota from a well known gallery. A copy of the original receipt will come with purchase.
Frank Shortey was a native Navajo but was raised in South Dakota and learned the traditional stories of the Lakota. He also learned the traditional ways of creating these painted hide robes.
    He passed in early 2007.
The hide for sale in on a full deer hide that measures 36” long by about 24”.
It is a depiction of the survivors of the battle of Little Big Horn. Across the center is a blanket strip pattern. Across the top shows Lakota warriors in camp regaling each other with tales of the Battle of Little Big Horn or Battle of Greasy Grass. Pictured above them are Crow Scouts for Custer that left when they saw they were vastly outnumbered. Across the bottom is the actual battle showing members of the 7th Cavalry and Lakota and Cheyenne warriors in battle.
No paint losses- hide in good condition. It comes with the wooden peg pins provided by the gallery to secure it to the wall. The biography page and page explaining the painted scene also come with purchase.
Of the painted hides I have seen by Frank Shortey- I feel this has the best, strongest imagery. You won’t get another chance to own a piece like this again soon.
Please see the pictures- they are also part of the description.
Any questions- just ask. I’ll do my best to answer.
